FIRST PHOTO: Lahaina’s Lucas Baril (from right) purchases plants from Jack Patnode and daughter-in-law Rachel Patnode Saturday morning at the Upcountry Farmers Market at the Kulamalu Town Center. Jack Patnode owns Patnode Family Farm, while Rachel and husband Ben Patnode own Animal Song Farm and Mohala Nursery, all in Kula. Baril said it was worth the drive from the west side. “It’s the best farmers market on the island,” Baril said. “You can’t beat the morning views. It’s a good vibe they have going on here.” Rachel Patnode said she appreciated having the popular venue to sell the plants and produce her family grows. “We’re very grateful for the Farmers Market, to have a place where we can make our living,” she said. “We’re thankful to Neil (Upcountry Farmers Market Manager Neil Coshever) for just running this wonderful market.”
SECOND PHOTO: Sadie Stoller of Brooklyn, N.Y. drinks from a freshly cut coconut Saturday at the Upcountry Farmers Market at the Kulamalu Town Center. Mom Nelli Stoller said her family does not see a lot of coconuts in Brooklyn. “This is all kind of new to us,” she said. “This doesn’t happen in New York.”
