Unless you have dual citizenship, you’ll need a visa to study abroad in York. International students have three options for visas in the UK. The first two are the Short Term Student Route and Short Term Study Visa, both of which you can get upon arrival from customs for FREE if you aren’t interning or working, and you only plan to study in York for six months or less. To get either of theses visas, you’ll need to provide:

  • Passport
  • Return plane ticket
  • Acceptance letter from a UK university
  • Bank statement to show you can support yourself while in the UK
  • If you are interning or working during your study abroad program in York or you want to stay for longer than six months, you’ll need a Tier 4 Student Visa. To apply for this you’ll need to have/complete:

  • Online application with fingerprints and pictures
  • Mail application to a UK Consulate in your home country
  • Upon arrival to the UK, you will have 10 days to collect a Biometric Residence Permit which costs £150 and lasts as long as your study abroad program is specified to last.
  • Like other European universities, The University of York has a collegiate system, meaning that each student studies within a home college at the university. Most international students live in a single room with a shared suite space, based in their college, which includes a bathroom and kitchen space. In addition, there are meal plan options for international students within their home college or they can choose to go without.
